Louse or lice are blood sucking parasites that infest the hair of humans. Often schoolgoing kids with long hair are one of the common keepers of these little pests. Not many would openly talk about this topic because of the social ostracising that comes with this parasitic infestation. However it is a common problem which is completely curable. What exactly are lice and nits? A louse is a wingless insect which scavenges on the skin cells, sebum or blood in humans and certain other species of animals and birds. They multiply by attaching eggs (called nits) on the hair of their host, using a special salivary secretion. The secretion attaches the eggs to the hair in a very strong bond which makes it difficult to remove them manually or even with a fine toothed comb. A fine toothed comb usually manages to catch the young and adult lice, but even that is not usually sufficient. How do you know if your child has lice? For starters, lice often cause itchiness in the scalp of the host. A child constantly scratching their head is often a sign. However, a child merely scratching their head is not necessarily affected with lice. Itchiness can be caused by a host of other problems such as dandruff. However, a close inspection of the hair and scalp is often warranted. If the lice infestation is not too severe, you may not find individual insects in the scalp. Look for nits on the hair strands. Nits look yellowish to brownish shiny teardrop-shaped structures along the hair strand.
